Bio – Jesus Christ
c. 6–4 BC–c. AD 30-33
“‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.’” Matthew 1:23
Jesus came into this world in a humble beginning in Bethlehem. He was born of a virgin mother and was brought up as the son of a carpenter in Nazareth in Galilee. Yet he was God’s Son on earth, sent here to purchase the pardon of men and pay the penalty for our sins, to live among us as a man, and to bring us closer to his heavenly Father. He was the “Messiah”, his birth fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament.
From around the age of 30, Jesus travelled across Galilee and also in Judea to preach his message, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God, challenging the religious leaders and teaching in parables. He called twelve men from a variety of backgrounds to follow him, and they became his disciples, training with him and preparing to carry on the ministry.
Jesus performed many miracles—the first was to turn water into wine, but he performed many more, healing the sick and blind, casting out evil spirits, calming stormy seas, walking on water, feeding huge crowds, and even bringing the dead back to life.
In Jerusalem, during the Passover festival, Jesus was arrested, tried, and executed by order of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor—crucified outside the city in a place named Golgotha, or Calvary. Three days later, he was resurrected, appearing first to the women who came to tend to his body. He later appeared to his disciples, and before he finally ascended to heaven, just over a month or so later, he had appeared to over 500 people, according to the apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians. His followers became known as Christians and went on to found the early church.
There are so many lessons to be learned from Jesus’ life and from his teachings, but it was his death that saved mankind—each and every one of us—from our sins. Since Adam’s sin, mankind had been separated from God, but through Christ’s sacrifice we have been reconciled to the Lord. Jesus is “the Lamb of God,”—the final and permanent sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, and under God’s New Covenant he is now the one mediator through whom we can come to God, for God will accept and forgive everyone who professes by word and life their belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and depends upon his death as the sacrifice for their personal salvation.
Jesus lived as a man among us, understanding our weaknesses and struggles, so that he could give his life to save us all. Christ’s compassion, humility, patience, courage, fortitude and devotion to God are beacons for us all, and his love comforts and sustains us.
