We may be used to thinking of the Bible as one large volume, but it is actually a collection of 66 individual books – 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Some of these books are short, others are longer. There are many different authors and many different styles – from the poetry of the book of Psalms to the more prosaic sermons of Deuteronomy or the narrative of Kings. There are lists of wise sayings, personal letters and comprehensive inventories of people and items. Some were written in the time of the Roman Empire, while others were begun nearly 3,500 years ago!
